Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is an injectable wrinkle treatment made from a minute amount of a highly purified form of botulinum toxin.
The aesthetic team at Nigro Dermatology Group uses Botox to eliminate pesky wrinkles that result from aging, such as:
- Crow’s feet
- Frown lines
- Forehead wrinkles
Along with Botox, the team offers Dysport® injections, another type of botulinum toxin. Your aesthetician works with you to understand your goals and recommends the best cosmetic injectable for your unique features.
How does Botox work?
Botox and Dysport are both neuromodulators, which means they block the signals that your nerves send to your muscles when you try to make an extreme expression.
The injectables only work on dynamic muscles, which are the muscles that force your skin into folds and creases when you squint, frown, or raise your eyebrows. Treatment safely calms your dynamic muscles so that your skin relaxes and smooths out, too.
Some men and women are reluctant to get Botox treatments because they’re afraid they’ll wind up with a “frozen face."
However, the aesthetic team at Nigro Dermatology Group has the expertise to make your injections look natural. While you won’t be able to make extreme expressions, you’ll have normal facial expression capabilities like laughing and smiling.
When should I start getting Botox?
If you already have mild to severe lines and creases around your eyes and forehead, neuromodulator injections can smooth them out and stop your dynamic muscles from reinforcing them.
However, even if you don’t have wrinkles yet, you can be proactive with regular Botox or Dysport treatments that stop wrinkles from forming in the first place.
You must be at least 18 years old to receive Botox, but there’s no upper age limit, as long as you’re healthy.
How long does it take for Botox to work?
Your Botox treatment only takes a few minutes. Botox is minimally invasive and only uses a tiny needle, so you can go back to your normal routine immediately following the procedure.
The neuromodulator needs to settle into your muscles, so you may not notice the effects for a few days or even up to two weeks.
Results vary, but the effects of Botox can last 3-5 months on average. The team helps you schedule your Botox treatments so that you don’t have to worry about wrinkles coming back between sessions.
