Fillers Q & A

What are dermal fillers?

A dermal filler is an injectable treatment that adds volume to your skin to help reverse the signs of aging. Fillers replace volume that’s lost due to natural aging and can make aesthetic improvements, such as:

  • Reducing or even eliminating wrinkles
  • Reducing the appearance of scars
  • Enhancing lips
  • Enhancing the contours of the face
  • Building up your cheekbones
  • Restoring lost volume to your midface

Your face is unique, and the team at Nigro Dermatology Group is proud to offer completely customizable filler treatment plans. The clinic uses only the best brands, including:

  • Juvéderm (such as Juvéderm Voluma™)
  • Restylane®
  • Belotero Balance®
  • Radiesse®
  • Sculptra®

Dermal fillers are a great therapy to combine with other anti-aging treatments for a natural-looking, youthful appearance without the need for a surgical facelift. Talk to your provider about including Botox®, IPL therapy, or other facial rejuvenation in your treatment plan.

How do dermal fillers work?

Most dermal fillers work by injecting a hydrophilic (i.e., water-loving) gel containing HA directly into areas of volume loss or into areas where you’d like to add extra volume, such as your cheekbones and lips.

Dermal filler treatment is minimally invasive, but many brands of fillers are formulated with the anesthetic lidocaine to keep you comfortable during your treatment. If necessary, your provider can use a topical ointment to numb the treatment area.

Depending on your goals, your provider may recommend more than one filler to restore facial volume, plump up wrinkles,  and contour your features.

What happens after I get dermal fillers?

After your dermal filler treatment, you notice an immediate change in your facial smoothness and volume. Because HA is hydrophilic, your injections also help you retain moisture in your face for a youthful glow.

You may be a little sore or swollen after your injections, but you can control discomfort with ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication.

How long do dermal fillers last?

The longevity of your fillers depends on the type of fillers you chose and your unique features. Most HA fillers last for an average of 6-18 months, depending on the formulation and the area treated. The team at Nigro Dermatology Group schedules your touch-ups so you can maintain your appearance without interruption.
