IPL

Nigro Dermatology Group

Cosmetic and Medical Dermatology located in Houston, TX

Sometimes over-the-counter treatments for skin concerns like sun damage, rosacea, scarring, or brown spots aren't strong enough to cause any noticeable improvement. Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is a non-invasive method that delivers targeted light energy to damaged cells beneath the skin's surface. Nigro Dermatology Group has a team of experienced practitioners at two practice locations in Houston, Texas, who provide IPL to men and women looking to improve their skin's texture and appearance. IPL Q & A

What is IPL?

IPL therapy is a cosmetic treatment that uses light energy to improve the skin's appearance and remove unwanted hair. You may also hear IPL referred to as a photofacial because it commonly treats the symptoms of photoaging or sun exposure.

Many people prefer IPL over other treatments because sessions are typically shorter, there are fewer side effects, and it has a faster recovery time.

How does IPL work?

IPL delivers multiple wavelengths of light energy to targeted areas of the body. The body absorbs the heat created by the light, which helps break down skin pigmentation and thread veins. IPL can also stimulate collagen production and disable hair growth cells.

IPL is just one of the many services offered by Nigro Dermatology Group. Call today to see if this treatment is right for you.

What conditions does IPL treat?

The team at Nigro Dermatology Group uses IPL to treat multiple skin concerns, including:

  • Acne
  • Age or liver spots
  • Birthmarks
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Freckles
  • Rosacea
  • Scars
  • Stretch marks
  • Sun damage
  • Unwanted hair
  • Varicose and spider veins
  • Wrinkles

A skin condition can make you feel self-conscious, but with IPL, you can address your imperfections and restore your youthful appearance.

What should I expect during and after an IPL treatment?

Your provider starts by applying gel onto your clean skin and then holds the IPL device against your treatment area.

You may experience a stinging sensation as your provider moves the device. People often refer to it as feeling like a rubber band snapping against their skin. If you have concerns about your comfort, your provider can give you numbing cream to apply 30-60 minutes before your session.

Depending on the treatment area size, the session can take 20-60 minutes. Throughout the procedure, you must wear dark glasses to protect your eyes.

You can expect the treated area to look pink and swollen for 4-8 hours, along with pain similar to a sunburn. Your skin will feel overly sensitive, so avoid using cream, makeup, or lotion for at least 24 hours, and avoid hot water until your skin begins to heal. A wet cloth can alleviate any immediate discomfort.

After 24 hours, apply moisturizer to the treated area twice a day, and continue to do so for the next 12 weeks.
